CITY OF MADISON PARKS
Friends of Ridgewood Trails
Mission Statement:
To preserve the natural beauty of the park through respectful use of Ridgewood Trails in Sycamore Woods (respect for nature and wildlife, along with the Ridgewood neighborhood).
Conservation of Ridgewood Trails fragile soil structure and loose boulders to avoid erosion (splash, sheet, rill, & gully).
Report illegitimate activity to Park Rangers at 608-235-0448
Objectives
1. Respect wildlife and current plant life, understanding that invasive species need addressed over time. Plan one or more events each year in collaboration with other Friends of Parks.
2. Respect neighbors in Ridgewood, especially those owning adjacent property (Ridgewood neighborhood is in District 17). Eco-friendly signage practices sparingly, for a natural look.
3. Organize cleanup efforts. Continue trash disposal days, launched in 2018.
4. Be stewards of the land aligned with Parks best practices. Schedule events online.
5. Make minimal adjustment to the fragile landscape to avoid erosion by incorporating conservation practices. Follow organic, regenerative, and no-till conservation ag practices.
[Gather 1 to 4 times per year and share report with Madison Parks of progress and concerns in meeting objectives.]
Leadership structure and governance model:
1. Neighbors and friends will be invited through messages and word-of-mouth, then directed to Parks Volunteer online site for event planning and at least one formal meeting each year.
2. Assignment of roles will include stewards and assistant stewards who will commit to a routine visit schedule to the park to promote legitimate use and report concerns (Park Rangers have always provided assistance since early rejuvenation efforts began in 2018).
